One More Can

At a time when every check of the news seems to reveal people who appear determined to make our country worse, it is especially worth pausing to note those making it better.

Today Sarah Fuller, a collegiate soccer player, and Vanderbilt University made history as Fuller became the first woman to play Division I Football (the American type) for a “Power 5” conference (the big b̴o̴y̴s̴leagues). I doubt she will be the last.

There may be a temptation to see this as merely another story about sports, but this is really a story about “can.” The belief in “can” is a sort of surrogate for hope. And that belief is made infinitely more accessible when you can visualize it.

I don’t expect a tidal wave of girls wanting to play Division I football, but every time we replace “can’t” with “can” related to someone’s identity, we infuse just a little bit of hope into a world thirsting for it.

This is not about Sports. It is about people and placing one more “can” where there has been only “can’t.”

That’s good for everyone.

Here’s what she said about the experience, “”I want to tell all the girls out there that you can do anything you set your mind to,” she said. “Like, you really can. If you have that mentality all the way through, you can do big things.”
