Karma Coaching Series, Session 6

In our last session, we discussed names and their connection to our identity and self-image.

I was pleasantly surprised to find a wide range of personalities, professions and ideologies amongst other Heathers in the world. The similarities between us all surprised me more.
What did you discover about those with the same name as you?

This week we focus on teachers and the impact they can have on our lives. Like most of my generation, I attended public school from Junior Kindergarten (4 years old) to Grade 13 (19 years old). I had an okay experience at school, although I was bullied and didn’t always enjoy my time in the institutions, think I would have flourished more in a non-traditional educational setting.

I was your typical reserved, quiet, intelligent child and didn’t hated public speaking of any kind. I worked well in groups but didn’t feel comfortable ‘putting myself out there’. I disliked being singled out or having my mistakes paraded in front of people, two things right there that guaranteed that I was a square peg in a round peg world. I detest people who do that to this day.

There were shining stars over the years. Teachers who stood out as having positively influenced my school career. There were teachers who showed me more compassion and understanding than I had come to expect from adults in my life.

Mr. Morgan, my Senior Kindergarten teacher, was one of those shining stars. As was Mrs. Barlow, my Junior Kindergarten teacher. Mr.Kennedy, in grade three. Mrs. Mercer, who taught me grade six. Mr. Evans, my science teacher in grades eight and nine. There were a few others, but as I go through the list, most were in elementary school. Teachers in the older grades became more generic and lumped together in my memory. The ones from the older grades who do stick out in my memory, do so in a negative manner.
