Luck of the Draw

Contrary to popular belief, there are four things you have complete and total control over. Four things that you can only blame yourself for regardless of the consequences that may result. So what are they? I thought you’d never ask.

The thoughts you think.

The words you say.

What you choose to believe.

How you choose to conduct yourself.

At first glance and in comparison to all that life is made of, those may seem fairly insignificant. But if you take some time to consider the role each of these have played in guiding the direction of day to day events, you just might find that what initially seems insignificant are the very things that influence every single aspect of your life.

Don’t get it twisted, regardless of what comes to pass there will be instances in which you will struggle to regulate your thoughts based on where you are mentally. There will eventually come a time where you question your own beliefs, people are going to trigger you to the point of making it seem that you have no choice but to speak whatever you are thinking into existence, and sometimes it may seem almost impossible to maintain your composure in the face of conflict. You are free to choose the best approach in the way you handle any of the four based on the details surrounding a given situation, and you should do so in a way that leaves no room for regret.

But hear me when I say your thoughts are nothing more or nothing less than what you make them, your beliefs can only be changed as much as you are willing to allow, it takes less effort to bite your tongue than it does to lash out, and it takes more energy to act out of character than it does to turn and walk away.

When it comes to anything else, life is one big deck of cards. As individuals, we are each dealt a limited portion which involves an external factor, the dealer.

When external factors are involved in where we begin and what we encounter along the way we have to accept what results from the luck of the draw. But at some point we have to take responsibility of how we manipulate our cards and stop blaming the dealer. You can’t control the many dealers you will encounter along the way. But despite being dealt a hand from a deck that’s completely stacked against you, you can still win the game if you play the cards right. You simply have to start with taking full ownership of tone four things you have complete control of.

At the end of the day you can’t swap the cards, but taking control of them will allow you the opportunity to play each hand to your advantage.
