Age of Addiction

denial quit smoking on monday;
not quite the lord’s day,
but close enough.
addiction is a devilish creature
so this is the last time,
but she said that last time.

bargaining said “this is the last time”
but he only worked on monday,
so in his free time,
he smoked a pack a day.
addiction is a sinful creature
& we are never enough.

depression told me there wasn’t enough
alcohol in the world to fill his time.
addiction is a horned creature,
said he’d leave monday
but now it’s god-knows-what day
& he’s spent all your time.

there was a time
when anger had done enough
snow & smack a day
to be sent to the slammer for a long, long time
he was arrested on monday,
kicking & screaming — addiction is a devilish creature.

when she’d took enough molly for monday
to look like friday & enough
blues to forget what time
she had class later that day.

born-again quitters, every other day
addiction is a horned creature.

most of my friends have done time.
i’ve had enough,
but it’s only monday.

stop battling the monday, quitting on creature
just promise me this time, it will be enough.
