A Trainee at Infosys

On September 13th 2015, Sunday, I went to Gate 2 of the Mysuru Infosys campus with a printout of my offer letter and a big suitcase of my essentials. I was wearing a black jeans, so dark that I thought it would make-do as a formal pants to my blue almost-formal shirt. I was accompanied by my proud dad, mom and mama. From that day on, I was to be known as a trainee in the campus. I enter, get a pink card, bid adieu to my family, and my journey starts!

I was quite sure I would do well even though I was from Electronics background in engineering, because I have coding background from 11th and 12th and I was the best coder in my class. Boy was I wrong! After the induction program I realized I wasn’t special- my first crack. I couldn’t remember 70% of what was being said especially because I couldn’t concentrate for a 6 hours delivery.

I did good for the first 3 days of training, and after that I freaked out. I was sure I wouldn’t be able to keep up, and I scared my parents off telling them I’m going to be thrown out because I’m a failure. I did fail, I did score low, but I worked my way up and cleared my training. I graduated. I had half my training in Mysuru and the other half in Hyderabad.

This is one of the most time-based tests of my life and career. When I think about how I felt back then, I still get shivers. But that chapter thought me that:

1. Obviously brilliant- They get everything quickly. Even if something’s hard, they can figure it out pretty soon. They’re usually the ones who leave a fear in the rest of the group.
2. I can do it too- They are the ones who put a lot of effort and try to keep up with the first kind. Even though they’re beneath the first, they try their best not to show, and will do their best to shine out.
3. Easily giving up, but no choice- The last kind are the ones who, no matter how much they rack their brains, find even the obvious solutions hard. If they had a chance, they would give up and sit in a corner and weep. But, since they can’t, they work and work and work, until they get the solution, not once but multiple times.

3. The future you is dependent on current you. If you want the future you to do well in the test or presentation, you better get your nose into your work and be a 100% prepared. The blood you spill now is worth it when you reap the award tomorrow.

4. When something seems hard and confusing, break it down. Take 1 task or problem at a time if you‘re’ “job-fulfillment based”. Consider 1 hour at a time if you’re “time based”. But get that job done. If you don’t, someone will.

5. You’re not special; no one is. You are needed and respected because you get that job done. Once you fumble, there is queue of people who would do your job and love it. Want to get replaced? No? Then, just keep swimming, as Dory says.

Now, being 6 years into the company, I am thankful for putting so much efforts and becoming a Systems Engineer at Infosys Ltd. I was trained in Python programming basics, Database management, and in the then popular middleware tool IBM Integration Bus 9 and message queueing tool IBM MQ 7.5. In the coming year I became an IBM Certified Solution Developer- IBM Integration Bus V9.0.
