Dream Voice

The first post we are analyzing is one titles “Odd nightmare”. Being a retelling of his dream, his writing maintains a very personal approach. Descriptors like “ sometimes it was me, but mostly it was a generic dude” remind the audience of the ever present author/dreamer. Using the words “generic dude” also establish a more casual tone, deeming the piece less “academic” than others. Though this is Rob’s perceived audience, that the readers of his blog would be looking for something more amateur and potentially more authentic.

Some other indicators of a more informal writing styles are spelling mistakes sprinkled across his writing. Though in no form does it take away from the content itself, it proves to show Rob to be laid-back in his approach to his writing.

Other descriptors Rob uses display his own personal views and perhaps experiences in life, phrases like “he just has that annoyed/embarassed look not uncommon to teenage boys being spoken for by their moms”. Little comments like this one, provide glimpses into perhaps Rob’s own experiences and his perspective on them. This establishes a feeling of familiarity and almost a sense of Rob attempting to reach out and relate to the audience. Rob seems to be saying “yeah, you know that look i’m talking about”. Whether or not the attempt is successful, the friendliness of Rob’s voice can be appreciated by many.

Besides that, Rob describes his dream in vibrant detail. He describes “ heavily injured and bleeding — crawls alone across the lawn back to the car, crying. It skips ahead again to the smoking remains of the car, still parked in front of the house” in very cinematic detail. As a dream should, it builds a completely new world with its own sets of rules and reality and immerses the dreamer completely. Although complete immersion may prove impossible by mere writing, Rob does a splendid job of describing his dreams in such detail that the viewer may paint their own picture of what Rob may have been dreaming.

Another post by Rob, titles “Animals are human too” carry this same voice from his previous post.

The tone in this dream post is a lot more lighthearted, filled with personal dialogue and jests to the readers. He states things such as “of their choice for a limited time. It was something for rich and influential people to play around with, but the whole thing was actually a front; some agency (aliens?)” or “There’s a mass-market CGI film in this somewhere” which are playful comments about the dream itself. This can be understandable as the last dream post was about a nightmare but this post still opens another side of Rob that can be exciting to see of Rob as a writer.

Rob again maintains a very illustrative way of writing describing this transformation process done by the “agency” of humans into different types of animals. He has an inviting tone that allows readers to be drawn in and submerge themselves into the world of his writing and dreams.

“Rob’s dream journal” is a great example of personal, amateur writing that is easily accessible and entertaining for readers to read. His playful tones to dramatic storytelling show his range of writing capabilities and ultimately being able to immerse an audience within the world of his dreams.
