Build digital teams

Digital teams are one of the most interesting teams to build. As a digital consultant, I have had the pleasure of building and managing a pool of interesting talents to deliver digital experiences for the modern audience.

What is a digital team?

A digital team creates digital experiences for individuals or business in the form of digital assets such as websites and mobile apps.

This article covers a generic view of key roles in a digital team and terms are not meant to be technical or a specific methodology such as waterfall or agile.

What’s different about this team?

Building a good digital team means to scout, recruit, train and manage a team of diverse talents and personalities that understands each others’ strengths and weaknesses. Unlike many other setups, a digital team is typically very diverse and harder to gel.

Why is this so? Let’s take an insurance agency for example. They are made up of senior and junior insurance agents who’s strengths and weaknesses are largely the same, they differ largely in terms of experience and exposure rather than personalities.

Frustrations tend to arise more within a digital team as team members tend to clash in terms of ideology, opinions, working style, communications, emotions and other aspects resulting from putting different personalities together.

Gelling the team

Scouting and recruiting digital talents is relatively easier. The crazy part comes when you need to get everyone to work together to achieve a single common goal. Don’t worry this is not the end of the world.

The key to success is time. A digital team builder will need to spend time understanding the strengths, weaknesses, personality and motivations of each talented individual. Uncovering these gems of information allows everyone on the team to understand each other further and the reason behind each of their thinking and behavior. A team needs time to listen and harmonize in order to work well together. For example, an engineer needs to understand why a designer is quiet, introverted, illogical and a perfectionist and an animator needs to understand why the sales dude is so talkative and full of energy even at the end of the day.

Once every team member understands each other, the outcome is a team that delivers digital experiences that are creative, empathetic and logical. Never ever doubt the potential of a successful digital team.
