Pleasure Reading

This semester my pleasure reading book choice has fallen on a horror novel «The Shining» by American author Stephen King. Although I’ve heard about this book as well as about its author quite many times, it did seem interesting for me until this year.

I guess the main reason for the increase of my interest for this book was the release of the movie «Doctor Sleep», based on the novel published in 2013, which is the sequel to «The Shining». So, since there was a lot of noise around the film and its prequel, I decided to find some information about these two stories. It turned out that, published in 1977, «the Shining» became an absolute bestseller and made King a remarkable author and the king of horror.

Also I was impressed by the fact that the setting and characters were influenced by King’s personal experiences, like his recovery from alcoholism, which he used in creation of the main character, and his visit to The Stanley Hotel, Estes Park, Colorado, which had a reputation of a place with paranormal activity. This hotel later became a prototype of the Overlook hotel in the book.

I got so intrigued by these facts that I decided to take a closer look at the book itself. So, now I’m reading it as my Pleasure Reading book and quite happy to admit that I like it a lot!
