Asynchronous Communication Is The New Remote Work

It enhances productivity and is even better for work/life balance

I first went remote over 8 years ago. During an internship, I noticed that the Marketing staff got to work from home, so when a position for the Social Media Marketing Intern opened up, I jumped. When it was time for me to renew the contract, I negotiated to be able to work remotely from home.

Immediately, I noticed a huge difference in my productivity, energy and overall happiness. I saved over 2 hours a day commuting, leaving me more time to relax, get outdoors and spend time with friends and family. I also loved not having to deal with my boss.

When I had to go to the office, I never seemed to be able to get anything done. Throughout the day, my boss would constantly interrupt me. Sometimes I was to write out notes she dictated. Other times I had to follow her around the kitchen as she made lunch, giving me a pep talk. I also found it hard to constantly sit at a desk for hours on end and focus.

Being able to create my own schedule meant that I could sleep in (I’m a night owl), linger over breakfast, start work, break up my workday with a workout, have lunch and then get to work again. I also could take a 10-minute stretch break every hour. For me, this was optimal for being able to focus and stay motivated. I could finally get into a flow state and created an entirely new Social Media Strategy in just one week that leveraged our online presence.

I was hooked. Never again would I go to an office.
