What to look for in a custom hoodie

Custom hoodies — just like normal hoodies serve so many different purposes — so you first need to consider why you’re thinking about getting custom hoodies. This goal should guide most of your choices and help to determine what’s the best hoodie for your needs.

The single largest difference between hoodies is often the weight and fabric type. However, there’s a certain amount of overlap between the two because the fabric choice can affect the weight.

Although the weight can seem like a meaningless measurement (because it’s a difference of ounces), weight can have a major impact on how a hoodie meets (or doesn’t meet) a person’s needs.

Lighter-weight garments aren’t going to keep you as warm as heavier ones. Depending on how you plan to use the hoodie, this can be either a benefit or a drawback. For example, if you’re trying to keep people warm during cold weather — such as employees who work outdoors or if you’re selling them to sports fans — this approach works well. However, a jogger who just needs a little extra warmth may find it too much.

Fabric weight can also have an impact on style. Fashionable hoodies, for example, tend to favor thinner fabrics.

The other major factor is the blend of materials used in the hoodie.

Greater cotton use typically means the hoodie will be both warmer and a bit heavier. It’s a benefit if you’re spending a lot of time outdoors in the cold, particularly if you’re a bit less active.

On the other hand, a higher amount of polyester for those who plan on being more active. Having more of it in the fabric blend will make the hoodie more breathable and adds moisture-wicking qualities.

So, what does all of that mean?

While the weight and composition influence a hoodie’s performance, the concept probably sounds a bit abstract. Here are three specific functions you should think about:

What are some things that make a hoodie feel comfortable?

How about softness? The way a fabric feels against a person’s skin is usually a major comfort factor.

Generally speaking, the more cotton in the hoodie, the softer that hoodie will be. Polyester and other materials aren’t going to be as soft as cotton and, if the fabric is a blend, the non-cottons will likely make the hoodie less soft.

Other elements may vary person-to-person. Although a lot of people like baggy hoodies because of the roominess, others prefer a snug fit. And there are an array of design elements where it’s hard to predict what somebody will find comfortable.

Do you expect the wearer will be outdoors a lot? If you’re giving custom hoodies to scouts, for example, the apparel will probably be brought camping or hiking. At that point, a mix of warmth and performance might be helpful.

However, if it’s going to sports fans who will be sitting outdoors for games, warmth is likely the only factor. (By the way, custom clothing is an incredible way to raise money for local teams. Not only are fans able to contribute to their favorite team, but they’re able to show their affection for that team… and, in the process, bring more attention to it!)

And, if the hoodies are being used for anything athletic, warmth is far less of a concern — after all, people will get a bit warmer working out anyway.

Does the hoodie need to breathe or wick moisture?

Polyester helps with the performance side of things. However, just going with a thinner cotton can also work.

Of course, there’s also a fourth consideration in people’s minds… price!
